DESCRIPTION OF FILM CLUB, TSOTSI

Academy Award Winner Best Foreign Film

Dir. Gavin Hood 2006
With: Presley Chweneyagae, Mothusi Magono, Israel Makoe, Percy Matsemela
South Africa/UK 94 mins 15 sub-titles
Based on Athol Fugard's 1980's novel but set in present day South Africa this film has been described as Soweto's answer to "Brighton Rock". A young gang of street thugs (Tsotsi) mercilessly pursue their crimal careers until a carjacking unexpectedly changes their leader's thinking. While unflinchingly portraying the violent and seamier side to life in the townships, this is a positive and ultimately redemptive movie.

REVIEWS

"Intense and powerful"

"Amazing and quite brilliant"

"I really enjoyed this film. It shows a different side of South Africa to the white, confident, cricket & rugby-mad one we're usually shown, and it offers an insight into the criminal underworld which we're told blights modern South Africa. The film shows us the human side of the people involved in a township gang, who make their living by stealing and killing. Totsi, the leader, accidently steals a baby when it's left in the car he car-jacks. The overall story is somewhat predictable in that it changes his outlook on life, but it provides the backdrop for showing us the dynamics of the township and how Totsi himself ended up as the leader of a gang. I didn't like the actual ending, but when you watch the dvd there are two alternative endings, which I recommend watching and which I thought were much more fitting. Definitely a film I'd watch again."
