DESCRIPTION OF MILLOM CASTLE

Licence to crenllate was given to Sir John Huddlestone in 1335, and the castle remained in the family for centuries. Huddlestones served at Agincourt and at Edgehill. In 1648 the castle was besieged by the Roundheads. There are considerable remains. On the east side there is an entrance whic leads through to the courtyard in which are the remains of the original gatehouse. On the north are the kitchens whilst to the south is the solar. The Great Hall is on the west side next to the ruins of the great tower. The building was converted for use as a farmhouse in the 19th century.
