DESCRIPTION OF DALTON CASTLE

A two-storey tower occupies the site of an Agricolan Roman fort; it seems to have served more as a place of refuge than a true castle, probably being erected during te time of Edward III (1307-1322). In the 16th Century a commission ordered its repair and it was used as a prison for the whole of Furness. During the latter part of the 19th Century it was the armoury of a local Rifle Volunteer group.
