DESCRIPTION OF RAF MILLOM AVIATION & MILITARY MUSEUM

RAF Millom opened in January 1941 as No.2 Bombing and Gunnery School and in summer became No. 2 Air Observer School. In 1942 it became No. 2 Observer Advanced Flying Unit until 1945 and in 1946 it was put under care and maintenance until 1952 when it was reopened for a 12 month period as No.1 Officer Cadet Training Unit. It was then again put under care and maintenance until the 1960’s when various army regiments passed through. HM Prison Service took it over in 1967.

RAF Millom had a pivotal role in the birth of what is today the RAF Mountain Rescue Service. For further information on the RAF Mountain Rescue Service

The museum project originated in a very small way in 1992, however due to a great deal of hard work by volunteers and ex-servicemen and women of the old RAF Millom our collection has all but outgrown the present buildings and the yard we occupy.

An archive of over 4000 photographs from the wartime era when the North West was a busy training & maintenance area, including a large number of personnel collections of memorabilia.

Histories of the airfields in the North West and aircraft crash sites are extensively covered. The museum specialises in the Dominion, Polish & Czech aircrews who served in the RAF.

We have several aero engines on display including RR Merlin, Kestrel, Avon & Griffon. Bristol Hercules, Junkers Jumo, and more.

Also many of the items on display have been recovered by excavating wreck sites including a display relating to the C4 "Time Team" dig that was carried out on two A-26 Invaders

There are a number of airframes and cockpits on display at the museum including Vampires, Tornado, Whirlwind and Fleas
