DESCRIPTION OF ABBEY HOUSE HOTEL

Set in 14 acres of private woodlands and gardens, the hotel takes its name from the neighbouring ruins of one of the greatest Cistercian foundations in the country, Furness Abbey.

The ‘Abbey’ echoes the quiet grandeur of life in days gone by. Built in 1914 by Sir Edwin Lutyens, the original sandstone mansion was the home and guesthouse of Commander Craven, Chairman of Vickers Shipbuilding. Many dignitaries came to stay, including King George V The Prince of Wales and the Queen Mother whilst she was Duchess of York.

Upholding this tradition of hospitality, today’s management treats its guests like royalty, too. So much so that the captains of business and industry have made the hotel a regular venue for their conferences and seminars.
