DESCRIPTION OF MUNCASTER CASTLE

WORLD OWL CENTRE
Large and small, fierce and friendly, beautiful and strange, owls are wonders of wildlife. At Muncaster, headquarters of the World Owl Trust, you will find one of the largest collections of these thrilling birds in existence. The centre is home to a diverse range - from bizarre fish owls to diminutive pygmy owls which are not much bigger than a sparrow. There are also buzzards, kestrels and red kites and a daily flying display on the Castle lawns (until November 5th)

HISTORY
Following his defeat at the Battle of Hexham in 1464, Henry VI took refuge here and, in gratitude, made a present of a glass vessel. This became known as the Luck of Muncaster, and was carefully preserved for centuries. Part of the original tower is incorporated into the present house, which was built in 1862/6 by Anthony Salvin. There are some very fine rooms with some good Tudor fireplaces and 18th century features.

REVIEWS

"We visited Muncaster Castle in December, and sadly the Castle itself wasn't open for viewing, so make sure you check opening hours for winter before you go! Even though we didn't see inside the Castle, every thing else was fabulous! We LOVED the owlery! The owls are fascinating, and WELL worth a visit. Definitely the high light of the trip. The gardens are also quite enchanting, and lovely to stroll through. If you have the afternoon free I recommend visiting the Herron feeding at about 3:30, very interesting indeed! Over all a day well spent, I recommend it to tourists, but also to locals, who could visit regularly and still be charmed by the gardens and fascinated by the owls!"
